Many indigenous Papuans do not test voluntarily for HIV, but go to hospital when they are already at an advanced stage of AIDS. In Papuan culture, one will only seek medical attention when it is impossible to walk or work. HIV/AIDS is also a new disease in the region, and people are still unaware of its modes of transmission and consequences.
